Benguela series
July 2024
Limited series of 3
Generated using 1'267 lines of code with countless parameter optimisations and smooth vector interpolation, this piece visualises directional flow fields in cobalt blue. Each iteration of the 18'335 byte algorithm produces a unique flow pattern, a one-of-a-kind configuration that cannot be exactly replicated - much like waves in the ocean, where no two ripples or swells are ever the same.

Characteristics

The three flow patterns are printed via an aluminum dibond on Hahnemühle FineArt Baryta (325 gsm | 100% α-cellulose). The paper’s distinct felt structure gives it a soft, tactile surface, bringing exceptional depth and a subtle three-dimensional quality to every print.

Drawn to the nutrient-rich Benguela current along South Africa’s southwestern coast and its kelp forests, the flow patterns mimic the dynamics of these cold waters in slow, continuous drift.
It forms a sort-of algorithmic diptych with the Agulhas series, each generated from the same underlying code yet expressed through distinct palettes and currents. It mirrors the real-world convergence of the two currents along the southern coast of Africa.
The series is also heavily inspired by Tyler Hobbs’ exploration of generative systems in the balance between algorithmic structure and natural variation.
