Agulhas series
Limited series of 3
July 2024
Generated using 1'267 lines of code with countless parameter optimisations and smooth vector interpolation, this piece visualises directional flow fields in coral red. Each iteration of the 18'335 byte algorithm produces a unique flow pattern, a one-of-a-kind configuration that cannot be exactly replicated - much like waves in the ocean, where no two ripples or swells are ever the same.

Characteristics
-
The three flow patterns are printed via an aluminum dibond on Hahnemühle FineArt Baryta (325 gsm | 100% α-cellulose). The paper’s distinct felt structure gives it a soft, tactile surface, bringing exceptional depth and a subtle three-dimensional quality to every print.

The flow patterns mimic the dynamics of the warm and powerful Agulhas current along South Africa’s southeastern coast.
This series forms a sort-of algorithmic diptych with the Benguela series, each generated from the same underlying code yet expressed through distinct palettes and currents. It mirrors the real-world convergence of the two currents along the southern coast of Africa.
The series is also heavily inspired by Tyler Hobbs’ exploration of generative systems in the balance between algorithmic structure and natural variation.
